Chapter 1

Mysuki Katami

The flight from Tokyo had been long, but Mysuki took something to help her sleep through it. She had to go through Immigration and transfer to Chicago from LAX, a process that always made her feel like total scum just for wanting to enter the country. American Immigration officers were the worst of all. They even made their own citizens feel like trash for coming into the country.

At least she had Haruto, her attractive and loyal bodyguard. Haruto never complained and always carried her luggage for her. And luckily, once they made it through Immigration, they had a private jet waiting to take her to Chicago. Getting on the plane, and even once she was in the air, she still had the sick feeling that someone was after her, determined to bring her down, perhaps bring the whole plane down. She worried that someone had tampered with the jet, somehow. But she reassured herself that it wasn’t possible, and she slept through the final leg to Chicago.

When they got there, it was the middle of the night. They were quickly whisked from the plane into the limo via private security that Haruto had set up. From there, they were taken to a downtown hotel where she had two adjacent suites, including a presidential suite for herself. Now that she was finally landed and in her hotel room, she wasn’t tired anymore. It didn’t matter that it was after midnight. It felt like the middle of the day to her. She was wide awake, and the buzz of Chicago infused her with the memories of her time in America back when she was in college.

She had been eighteen when she was sent to the United States to study business and international diplomacy. Her first impression of America was that the people were rude, loud, short-sighted, and ignorant. They walked and ate at the same time, and they didn’t seem to care when they embarrassed themselves in public. They just laughed it off like it was nothing. Like they had no concept of honor or saving face. It was almost impossible for Mysuki to adjust. She focused on her studies and made few friends and waited for the day when she would get to go home to Tokyo.

Luckily, the friends she did make saved her from completely giving up and moving back to Japan in the middle of her sophomore year. She was doing well in her studies; she just hated the atmosphere and was beginning to withdraw into herself.

She met Erin one afternoon when she was on the top floor of the library watching cars go by down in the street below. She wished she was driving one of them as far away from this city as she could get. She had put her laptop in her bag and was about to go back to her dorm and read until she finally fell asleep.

“Hey, I’ve seen you around,” Erin had said from behind a row of books.

Mysuki jumped. She hadn’t heard the girl walk up behind her. It was raining outside, and the drops were pattering against the window. Mysuki hoped she didn’t mention anything about seeing her eating lunch alone in the cafeteria earlier that day.

“We have a psychology class together,” Erin continued when Mysuki looked back at her.

“Oh,” she said. “Right. I’ve seen you before.”

Erin stared at her a little while longer. “Are you studying?” she asked.

“Actually, I was just about to head back to my dorm for the night.”

“Hmm.” Erin crossed her arms. She was wearing a black leather jacket and black boots that looked like they could kick some major ass. “Do you want to do something else instead?”

Mysuki looked at her curiously. She didn’t know what the girl was up to, and it sounded a little sketchy. But she also didn’t want to pass up a chance to make a new friend. She agreed to go with Erin, who took her to a place where she and her friends spent their Friday and Saturday nights street-racing cars and partying until the early morning hours.

“This is Mysuki,” Erin said when they got out of her car and met her friends.

After that night, she felt the blood-pumping adrenaline rush of street-racing, and never looked back. The feeling of control she had with her hands on the steering wheel and her foot working the pedals was like no other high she had ever experienced. Erin became her best friend throughout the rest of college, and they promised to keep in touch. Even if they lived on opposite sides of the world.

Haruto was in the bathroom when she pulled out her phone and texted Erin. He would never let her go out on her own. He was good at his job, protective and smart, and watchful. But he worried about her in America. He worried about her everywhere.

She looked out the window, the way she had the afternoon that she met Erin, staring down on the traffic below.

I’m in town, she texted her friend. What are you up to?

OMG, Erin texted back. Let’s meet up. Are you busy?

Not at all. Want to go to Underground?

They agreed to meet there in half an hour. Haruto was still in the restroom, perhaps a little sick from flying or from the cheap junk food. She quickly changed into something much sexier with a pair of high-heel shoes. Most people would be too exhausted after a day of traveling to go out in the middle of the night, but heading to one of her favorite nightclubs was all she wanted to do. If she stayed inside and tried to sleep, she would lie awake all night long with the memories of her father and his death haunting her.

Just as the doorknob to the bathroom started to turn, she grabbed her room key and slipped out the door, rushing down the hall to the elevator.
